It was a fresh new start for the immigrants coming to the U.S.. Many came from Ireland, Germany, Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. We also in the West had a lot of Asian immigrants. Our country at this time was expanding westward. During the westward expansion the population was growing more immigrant were coming more people were moving westward. People were coming from different places from all over the world for a new start, new freedoms, escaping hardships and poverty, for jobs and for a better life.

4. What might be the reasons for the population increases (or decreases) in the different regions of the country (Northeast, South, West, etc.).

For the first half of the 1800's, the country grew a lot and many people came all areas of the country, especially the north and south of the country. Many people came to the country to start new lives, escape poverty, high taxes, unfair laws. the US was the land of opportunity.

During the Civil War, the North and South grew slower than the West. The West grew like crazy, most likley because people tried to escape the war, and immigrants wanted to avoid the war. During the  Civil War the population in the North and South increased slower, but also many soldiers were dying from the Civil war about 260,000 people died from the Civil War.

After the Civil War, the West continued to grow very very fast.
